Terms and Conditions – Ultimate School Cook Off Competition
By submitting your entry, you agree to comply with these terms and conditions.
The competition is administered by International Hotel School whose registered office is at 8th Floor Strauss Daly Place, 41 Richefond Circle, Ridgeside Office Estate, Umhlanga, 4320, Durban, South Africa.
Employees of International Hotel School or their family members or anyone else connected in any way with the competition or helping to set up the competition shall not be permitted to enter the competition.
There is no entry fee and no purchase necessary to enter this competition.
The competition is open to all entrants in Grade 11 or 12 in South African schools only. Upon request, confirmation of this must be provided to International Hotel School in the form of a term report from the school that the entrant attends, or a letter from that school.

Only original photos will be accepted. International Hotel School will not be responsible for the content of any material submitted by the entrant and the entrant accepts that he/she will be responsible for ensuring that any material submitted does not infringe any third party rights (such as intellectual property rights) and he/she will be liable for any claims, losses, fines, penalties, costs or damages suffered or incurred by the entrant or International Hotel School as a result of any such infringement.
Recipes and images taken off the internet or a cook book will result in the disqualification of the entrant.
By submitting a recipe and photograph into the competition, the entrant consents to the use of their image in that photograph on materials (of any medium, including still photographs and film) for publicity, advertising and promotional purposes worldwide and on the internet (including any websites hosted by International Hotel School as well its Social Media channels, for purposes relating to the promotion of the competition in this year as well as in subsequent years.
If the photograph features any person other than the entrant, the entrant confirms that he/she has obtained the consent of all persons pictured in the photograph, and to the use of their image in that photograph on materials (of any medium, including still photographs and films) for publicity, advertising and promotional purposes worldwide and on the Internet (including on any websites hosted by the Promoter and its related companies), for purposes relating to the promotion of the competition in this year as well as in subsequent years.
An entry is valid if it contains a photograph as well as an accompanying recipe.
Entrants must not endanger themselves or others, or take any unnecessary risks in order to produce or make any entry to be submitted to this competition. The entrant and their parents/guardians are solely responsible for any expenses incurred in the creation and/or submission of their entry to this competition.
International Hotel School assumes no responsibility for lost, unauthorised, misdirected, illegible, falsified, delayed or incomplete entries, all of which are invalid and void, or for difficulties experienced in submitting an entry to this competition, including as a result of any technical delay, failure or defect.
No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.
Closing date for entries will be midnight on the 25 May 2015. After this date no further entries to the competition will be permitted. Entrants will then have an extra six (6) days to promote their recipe/s, the closing date for voting will be midnight 31 May 2015.

Method of Selection:
Website component: Regional finalists will be chosen using a voting system: 60% of the assessment will be based on the number of votes which come from public voting on the website and 40 % will come from IHS management based on the recipe and photo submitted.
Entry is unlimited; participants can enter as many times as they wish. Votes are counted per ENTRY and not per ENTRANT.
The Ultimate School Cook Off 2014 winner may not participate in the 2015 competition. Semi-finalists and finalists may enter in the 2015 competition.
Voter allowed ONE (1) vote per recipe.
Entrants are encouraged to share their entry on their social channels and to encourage their friends and family to vote for them.
Entries will also be randomly selected and shared on International Hotel School social channels to encourage voting.
Semi Finalists will be chosen from each region (as detailed on www.schoolcookoff.co.za) and will compete in a regional cook off.
Regional Cook Offs
The Regional Cook Offs will take place at the respective regional International Hotel School campus (Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban).
At the Regional Cook Off, semi-finalists will be required to each make the same set recipe. Marks will be rewarded for taste, texture, flavour, colour and plating.
In the Regional Cook Offs the winners will be chosen by an independent panel of judges appointed by International Hotel School.
Transport to the Regional Cook Off will be the entrant’s responsibility.
Upon completion of the regional cook off, a winner for that region will be announced.
All semi-finalists must consent to publicity which will be present at the event and coverage that will take place post the event.
Regional finalists will then complete in the Ultimate Cook Off to be held at Unilever Food Solutions SA headquarters in Durban.
Regional winners will win a tuition bursary to study the One Year Culinary Arts programme at International Hotel School. The tuition bursary is valid for study during 2016 or 2017 only and cannot be transferred to other International Hotel School programmes or for cash.
Ultimate Cook Off
The regional finalists from the Johannesburg Campus and the Cape Town campus will be flown to Durban to compete in Ultimate Cook Off finals. Transport to the airport will be the entrant’s responsibility while transport from the airport to Unilever Food Solutions SA headquarters will be IHS’s responsibility. Should parents, friends or family of the semi-finalist wish to attend the Ultimate Cook Off they are welcome to do so, but will be responsible for their own transport to the event.
At the Ultimate School Cook Off, semi-finalists will be required to each make the same set recipe and one dish from a Mystery Basket. Marks will be rewarded for taste, texture, flavour, colour and plating.
In the Ultimate Cook Off the winners will be chosen by an independent panel of judges appointed by International Hotel School.
Upon completion of The Ultimate School Cook Off, a final winner of the competition will be announced.
All finalists must consent to publicity which will be present at the event and coverage that will take place post the event.
The winner of each Regional Cook Off will win a tuition bursary to study the One Year Culinary Arts programme at International Hotel School.
The tuition bursary is valid for study during 2016 or 2017 only and cannot be transferred to other International Hotel School programme or for cash.
Bursary Winners need to meet the entry requirements for the programme before they may commence study.
Gourmet Trip to London
The Ultimate School Cook Off winner will win a Gourmet Trip to London. He/she will be accompanied on this trip by an International Hotel School staff member. The trip will take place during January 2016. Dates and finalised details of the trip will be supplied to the winner.
Due to the booking restrictions of the restaurants in London, bookings can only be confirmed 3 months prior to the dinner and thus cannot be confirmed at this time.
The winner will be responsible for their own visa application (and the cost thereof) and spending money on the trip, as well as lunch and beverages during the trip (except during meals).
The prize will include return flights to London, 3 nights’ accommodation in London. Two of the dinners will take place at various restaurants in London, one of which will be at a Michelin Starred Restaurant, and the other at a renowned restaurant and the 3rd dinner will be a casual affair. Transport will be paid for and the trip will follow a set itinerary which will be communicated to the winner.
If the winner cannot claim the prize, we reserve the right to withdraw the prize from the winner and pick a replacement winner.
During the London trip, International Hotel School will be covering the event on its social media channels, and upon completion a compilation video will be put together for publicity purposes. The winner is to consent to this.
The parents/guardians of the winner will need to consent to their child undertaking the trip to London. A consent document will be submitted to the parents/guardians upon announcement of the winner for this purpose.
International Hotel School reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition and these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, act of God or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation or any other event outside of International Hotel School’s control. Any changes to the competition will be notified to entrants as soon as possible by International Hotel School.
International Hotel School is not responsible for inaccurate prize details supplied to any entrant by any third party connected with this competition.
No cash alternative to the prizes will be offered. The prizes are not transferable. Prizes are subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of equivalent value without giving notice.
International Hotel School will notify the winner with all the details for collection of the prize.
International Hotel School’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
By entering this competition, an entrant is indicating his/her agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.
The competition and these terms and conditions will be governed by South African law and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of South Africa.
The regional and final winners agree to the use of his/her name and image in any publicity material. Any personal data relating to the winner or any other entrants will be used solely in accordance with current Customer Protection legislation and will not be disclosed to a third party without the entrant’s prior consent.
The name of the winner may be featured on International Hotel School’s website www.hotelschool.co.za and also on a small amount of press materials that may appear in both online and offline media.
International Hotel School reserves the right to change the aforementioned terms and conditions at any time without prior notification. It is the entrant’s responsibility to check these terms and conditions for changes.
